EV charger installation cost in Detroit, 2026

Metro Detroit installers who publish prices put a basic Level 2 install (240V circuit, up to 50 feet of wire, permit) at about $900–$1,500, and a typical all-in job without a panel upgrade at $500–$2,500. A 200-amp panel upgrade adds roughly $1,500–$3,500. DTE’s Home EV Charger Rebate repays the full charger and installation invoice for income-qualified households, and Detroit lists a $176 per-station EV charger inspection fee.

  • Household income must be at or under 200% of HHS poverty guidelines (for 2026, $31,920 for one person or $66,000 for a family of four), verified through DTE’s income verifier.
  • You must be a DTE Electric residential customer in good standing with an EV registered at that address, owned or leased for at least 24 months.
  • The new Level 2 charger must be installed after January 1, 2025, and you must apply within 6 months of installation.
  • The rebate is based on the contractor’s itemized invoice and reviewer discretion; drywall repair and paving are not covered, and DTE says the amount and availability can change at any time.

Permits

Detroit’s Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department (BSEED) fee schedule lists an Electrical Vehicle Charging Station item at $176 per station (a one-hour base inspection, with more possible if the inspection runs longer), on top of the $66 electrical permit base fee. Other line items that may apply: $20 per new circuit and $59 for a rough inspection in a single- or two-family home. Source: City of Detroit BSEED fee schedule (modified July 18, 2025). Suburbs such as Dearborn, Royal Oak or Troy set their own fees.
