EV charger installation cost in Portland, 2026
Portland-area installers who publish prices put a short-run Level 2 install at about $600–$2,000 (charger not included), and $2,000–$3,500 for a long or concealed run. - PGE rebates require enrolling in Smart Charging, which pauses home charging on weekdays from 5 to 9 p.m. (you can opt out of individual events).
- Chargers enrolled from PGE’s qualified products list must be hardwired and installed by a licensed electrician.
- The service upgrade rebate needs a licensed electrician, an upgrade to 200 amps or more, and receipts with the license number; subpanels do not qualify.
- Up to two charger rebates per account, one per EV. The program runs through December 31, 2028 under its current terms (PGE Smart Charging terms, revised Oct 1, 2026).
Permits
Portland requires an electrical permit for any new 240V circuit, including an EV charger circuit. Licensed contractors (or owner-occupants doing their own work) apply on DevHub, and the work needs a final inspection to close the permit. Oregon adds a 12% surcharge to all permit fees, and plan review adds 25% when required. Details: Residential Electrical Permits and the City fee schedule. Suburbs (Beaverton, Gresham, Hillsboro, Vancouver WA and others) run their own permits.
- Installer response testing (who replies to quote requests) has not been done yet.
- Parts of the Portland area are served by Pacific Power rather than PGE; one installer says Pacific Power customers may qualify for up to $1,500, but we have not verified that on Pacific Power’s own site.
- The status of the federal 30C charger tax credit for 2026 installs was not verified with the IRS.
- Suburban permit fees are not covered on this page.
