Permits
The City of San Diego requires an electrical permit for an EV charger. Chargers in a private garage at a single-family home, duplex or townhouse need no plan review: apply online as a Simple No-Plan permit (No-Plan, Residential, Combination Mech/Elec/Plum) and keep the Circuit Card on site for the inspector. Fees and rules: DSD Information Bulletin 187. Other cities in San Diego County (Chula Vista, Oceanside, Escondido and so on) and unincorporated areas run their own permits.
- Installer response testing (who replies to quote requests) has not been done yet.
- Some installer pages mention SDG&E charger rebates; we could not find a current home charger rebate on SDG&E’s own page.
- Whether other DSD fees (circuit fees under Information Bulletin 103, mapping fee) apply to a typical home install was not confirmed.
- Statewide California charger programs and the federal 30C tax credit status for 2026 installs were not verified.
- Cities outside the City of San Diego are not covered on this page.
