  • The credit is against DC income tax and covers equipment and labor directly tied to buying and installing the charging equipment at a home you live in, in the District.
  • It is capped at $1,000 per vehicle charging station and does not cover the cost of building or buying any real property or structure.

Permits

DC electrical permits come from the Department of Buildings (DOB) (DOB electrical permit). DOB’s fee schedule lists an Instant Permit: Electrical General at $20 plus a 10% enhanced fee ($22.00), and an Instant Permit: Electrical Heavy-Up at $59 plus 10% ($64.90); the schedule also lists a battery charger line at $33 for the first unit plus 10% (DOB fee schedule). A licensed electrician normally pulls the permit.

Not yet verified:
  • Which DOB permit type applies to a typical home EV charger (Electrical General, Heavy-Up for a service upgrade, or the battery charger line) was not confirmed with DOB.
  • The credit section we cite covers tax years 2027 through 2036; we did not confirm the rules for chargers installed in 2026.
  • Some sites list a Pepco DC home charger rebate ($300 or $500); we could not confirm a current DC offer on Pepco’s own site.
  • Installer response testing (who replies to quote requests) has not been done yet.
  • Installers report the federal 30C charger tax credit ended for chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026; we have not verified this with the IRS.
